Why have men lived in the region of Cabrières for so long?

It was here, 5000 years ago, that the first copper mines in Western Europe were developed.

The rocks around Cabrières are some of the oldest in the Languedoc, dating from between 325 and 500 million years, and they are rich in beautiful and fragile geological, palaeontological, mineralogical and archaeological elements.

They formed part of a vast mountain range across southern Europe, the Hercynian Range, which began to form at the end of the Primary geological period. Fossils of primitive life-forms have been found in sediments which were previously deposited in seas which have long since disappeared.

There is a permanent exhibition within the 'Cave Coopérative de Cabrières' : it is a general presentation of the geology and the early history of the region through models, explanatory panels and displays of the rocks and archaeological discoveries.

The fossils, rocks and minerals are exhibited against the background of the sea bed at the time of the Primary geological period. Fossils of typical life-forms of the period are on display, such as trilobites, goniatites, crinoides and brachiopods.
