They
formed part of a vast mountain range across southern
Europe, the Hercynian Range, which began to form at
the end of the Primary geological period. Fossils
of primitive life-forms have been found in sediments
which were previously deposited in seas which have
long since disappeared.
There
is a permanent exhibition within the 'Cave Coopérative
de Cabrières' : it is a general presentation
of the geology and the early history of the region
through models, explanatory panels and displays of
the rocks and archaeological discoveries.
The
fossils, rocks and minerals are exhibited against
the background of the sea bed at the time of the Primary
geological period. Fossils of typical life-forms of
the period are on display, such as trilobites, goniatites,
crinoides and brachiopods.
